Water-based PU release agent for flexible foams: high performance and low VOC content

25/02/2026

In the polyurethane (PU) foam industry, particularly for automotive seating and technical components, the quality of the release process has a direct impact on the final appearance, production consistency, and non-quality costs.
Faced with growing demands for reduced VOC emissions, operator safety, and optimized production rates, Keck Chimie develops water-based release agents suitable for intensive industrial environments.

A release agent for polyurethane foam designed for the automotive industry

Release agent 8670/31 is an emulsion release agent (wax and oil-based) intended for demolding flexible and rigid PUR foams, particularly in the manufacture of automotive seats, headrests, armrests, and technical flexible foam components.
Its hybrid formulation contains approximately 10% solvents (VOCs), combining:
Effective mold/foam separation
Process stability
Significant reduction in solvent load compared to traditional release agents
Ready to use, it can be easily integrated into automated spraying systems compatible with high-speed production lines.

Optimizing demolding in high-speed production

In the automotive sector, polyurethane foam processors are looking for:

  • Clean demolding without tearing or surface defects
  • Consistent visual quality of the foam
  • Controlled consumption
  • Perfect compatibility with automation

The 8670/31 ensures reliable release with a dry feel (“dry grip”), reducing the risk of secondary sticking or aesthetic defects.

The recommended parameters (material pressure 0.3-0.5 bar / process pressure 2-3 bar) allow for controlled and repeatable application, which is essential in automotive production.

Used on molds at 50-60°C, it guarantees effective separation while preserving the integrity of the polyurethane surface.

A water-based technical solution to support industrial transition

The predominantly water-based release agent 8670/31 (≈79.8% water), is part of Keck Chimie’s water-based industrial chemistry strategy.
Objectives:

  • Reduce emissions in the workshop
  • Improve working conditions
  • Support the transition to lower-impact formulations.
  • Reserved for professional use, it meets industrial standards while complying with regulatory requirements.
